When it comes to fighting for environmental justice, Bernard Ansu brings both passion and lived experience to the frontlines. As an Environmental Organizer with United Congregations of Metro-East (UCM), Bernard channels his deep connection to the land and his firsthand understanding of pollution’s impact on communities into powerful grassroots advocacy.

What inspired you to join UCM?:
I joined UCM because I’m passionate about environmental justice and wanted to help communities like East St. Louis fight pollution and protect their health through grassroots organizing.
What previous experience prepared you for this role?:
Growing up on a farm in Africa taught me to value nature, hard work, and sustainability—skills that now drive my passion for environmental justice.
Are there any personal experiences that have shaped your dedication to this cause?:
Yes—seeing how pollution harmed my community back home and now witnessing similar issues in East St. Louis has fueled my dedication. I’ve lived the impacts of environmental neglect, and that personal connection drives me to fight for cleaner, healthier communities.

I have a passionate for Community development which also aligns with my work with ucm
