On Saturday, June 21, UCM hosted Boxing for a Cause: An Arthur Johnson Invitational in support of gun violence awareness. Here’s what a few members of our team had to say about the event.

The Boxing event that took place on June 21 of this year was a full of excitement and family atmosphere. The kids in attendance were excited to see and watch kids their age enjoying something they love to do. After each match, so much sportsmanship was shown to each other. Everyone was asking how often we do this and we need to do it a lot more. Parents wanted their kids involved for the next event.

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to attend the End the Gun Violence event at East St Louis Senior High and it was truly inspiring. What made it especially impactful was seeing a contact sport, something often seen as aggressive used as a symbol of unity, strength, and peace. The event brought together people of all ages and backgrounds, showing the power of community when we rally behind a shared cause. From the players on the field to the supporters in the stands, the energy was electric and full of purpose. It’s events like this that remind me change is possible when we stand together. I’m already looking forward to seeing how we can grow and improve the event next year, continuing to spread the message of peace, strength, and community.

On Saturday, June 21, United Congregations of Metro-East (UCM) proudly participated in the Boxing for a Cause event at East St. Louis Sr. High School—an Arthur Johnson Invitational dedicated to raising awareness about gun violence. The evening was filled with energy and purpose as community members gathered for a thrilling lineup of boxing matches, including spirited participation from local youth. UCM was on the ground sharing flyers about the Clean Energy Workforce initiative and engaging attendees about our work to build safer, more sustainable communities. Donned in bright orange “Stop Gun Violence” T-shirts provided by UCM, our team stood in solidarity with those affected by gun violence. It was a powerful and fun experience that blended advocacy with action, reminding us of the strength that comes when community and purpose come together.
